New Teacher Development
New teachers in the Boston Public Schools are guaranteed support in their first years that helps them continue to develop the skills that will make them effective teachers. The New Teacher Development program, based on a model of support developed by the New Teacher Center in Santa Cruz, provides every first-year teachers with one-on-one coaching and mentoring. The first year of teaching kicks off with the New Teacher Institute in August, where teacher meet other members of their cohort, as well as district leaders responsible for the development of the content that will be implemented in classrooms. In subsequent years, support may include online mentoring, additional professional learning opportunities, visits to other classrooms, and school-based coaching.
Great schools start with great leaders. And great leaders share leadership with teachers who wish to build their own schools, and participate in the development of a strategic plan to improve school quality. The Boston Public Schools Lead Teacher program, as well as numerous other teacher leadership opportunities in the district and with partners, ensures that every teacher in BPS has the option to develop skills to keep them engaged throughout their careers.
